June 1, 2007 update of wireless cities and counties posted

I have updated my list of US cities and counties with municipal wireless broadband networks. The list, dated 1 June 2007, shows 385 US cities and counties with networks up and running, and in the planning stage. On 1 June 2007 I updated the list of US cities and counties with wireless networks (as well as those with networks in deployment or planning stages). Download the PDF from here.

As of 1 June 2007, there were 385 cities and counties in the US in the deployment / planning phase and with networks up and running. If you add the number of cities and counties that are seriously considering municipal Wi-Fi, that number rises to 424.

Esme, I am impressed by the list posted. Axiss-BSE provides and installs fiber. Is there any possibility of getting a list of the municipal fiber jobs? If so, what is your recommendation on going about it?

Springfield OH recently awarded their city wide network to Harbor Link.

Esme,
Dublin-Gwinnett County, GA in your wireless list are two distinctly different locations. Dublin is in the middle of the state on I-16, and Gwinnett County is on I-85 Northeast of Atlanta. It’s county seat is Lawrenceville. (My mailing address is Lilburn.) So, I think the projects should be separated. (I really don’t know if there is a Dublin project.)
The latest news on the Gwinnett project is this:

There appears to be a bit of a typo on the last page: Arizona doesn’t have a Clarke County. Perhaps it should read “Clarke County, AL”? That county is doing a feasibility study as is Clark County, NV. Regardless, thanks for updating this very helpful list. It’s nice to have it all in one place!

Indeed, Dana is correct. Clarke County is in Alabama, not Arizona. I mixed up AL with AZ. I will update this list shortly.

You can add two cities to the list. Santa Rosa, CA and Petaluma, CA. Both are in early stages of deployment, we’ve covered the downtown regions only. Sonic.net is building both networks.

These wireless cities are popping up everwhere and they are really great! Unfortunately, when the wireless signal is not alwas the best I use the “Wi-Fire” which helps me to get a fast and clear internet signal from municipal wireless areas when I am at home and when I am traveling! This small divice plugs right into m computer and ensures a stronger connection in these wirelss cities.

Esme, please disregard my earlier comment today regarding Aurora, Chicago and Naperville. With a little more of a carefull look at your listings on page 5, we see that you have already included these municipalities. The only thing we may be able to add is that it appears as though MetroFi has been awarded the contract for Aurora and will likely pick up Naperville as well.

We would still appreciate any help finding a listing of passenger trains in the U.S. that offer wireless service.

The City of Wichita KS, is considering the potential of a public-private muni-wireless network. We have completed the RFp process and am now in the selection phase.
