3G iPhone reviews: not much new there

Before you go out and buy the new 3G iPhone from Apple, read the reviews by David Pogue and Walt Mossberg. In summary: if you already have an iPhone, it’s not worthwhile getting the latest version. Apple is opening its iPhone applications store tomorrow in connection with the 3G iPhone launch, but those applications will also be available to existing iPhone users. One application I’m keen on using is iCall, a VOIP program that allows you to make calls via…

Free Wi-Fi adds to comforts on luxury bus between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur

Wi-Fi on public transport is hot these days. The high-speed TGV service between Paris and Brussels will be launching Wi-Fi service on May 14 for trains traveling between those cities, expanding the service later to trains going all the way to Amsterdam.

Wi-Fi cameras track London speed devils

The city of London has been making life difficult for motorists in the past few years and for good reason. The mayor instituted a “congestion charge”, a fee that people driving into London have to pay for the privilege of accessing this traffic clogged city. I don’t know why these articles seem to come together in bunches but this week, Wi-Fi Planet has a long piece written by Daniel Casciato about Wi-Fi as an amenity for commuters and USA Today pointed out that more cities are offering Wi-Fi to bus passengers. The Wi-Fi Planet article goes into greater depth (I was interview for the piece), covering Wi-Fi on buses in the UK and transit authorities in Montreal, Massachusetts, Chattanooga, Nevada, and Stockholm — emphasizing that…

Riverside muni wireless network making good progress

The Riverside, California muni Wi-Fi network is nearing completion, according to the Inland News. Riverside issued an RFP in 2006 and selected AT&T from among three bidders. From the beginning, Riverside had intended to use the network not just for Internet access but for a host of municipal services. For a while it seemed as if the network would not expand beyond the downtown area. Now, apparently, AT&T is deploying the network in other parts of Riverside to cover 55…

Philly muni Wi-Fi sale is city’s “best alternative”

Philadelphia’s muni wireless network is in a holding pattern as it waits to see what EarthLink’s proposed sale of the network will mean to its future. Last week, in a interview with local radio station KYW, city Chief Information Officer Terry Phillis discussed the implications of the sale, calling it “by far the best alternative ” for the future of the network.

He acknowledged that finding an appropriate buyer will be challenging. Phillis said the buyer “would have to have a financial model that would…
