A mobile wireless public safety system that promises to deliver a turnkey interoperabile solution was announced today by New Energy Technologies, a provider of in-field communications for government and municipalities. According to a press release, the NETwrkx Starter Kit uses BelAir Networks’ carrier grade wireless broadband technology ”to build a high-speed wireless network covering more than one square mile in less than an hour.”

The Wi-Fi future of ten Colorado suburbs, including Boulder, rests in the hands of willing investors, according to C-Com Affinity Telecom, the company that won the contract to deploy the service.

The company beat six other providers in competition to build a test network that could be the precursor for a regional network that would bring low-cost broadband access to the 10 cities.

This could prove challenging. Private investors have been cautious about muni Wi-Fi projects since EarthLink’s retreat from the market…

Meraki, a wireless mesh equipment maker, has announced a bold plan to create a citywide Wi-Fi cloud in San Francisco that would provide free Internet access. The project relies upon residents setting up solar-powered mesh nodes on their rooftops and repeaters in their homes.
