Skypilot Networks gets additional $3.4 million funding for muni wireless

Skypilot has raised an additional $3.4 million from its current investors, Mobius Ventures and August Capital. The company has raised over $70 million since its inception. Paul Gordon, CEO of Skypilot, says that the company needs this additional round of financing to be profitable.

Los Gatos, Ca., unwires municipal areas

The city of Los Gatos, California has unwired its municipal network to provide seamless wireless connectivity around city facilities. The idea is to enable municipal workers to access critical city data and, at the same time, provide free Internet connectivity to the public in those areas.

According to city informtion systems manager Chris Gjerde the network figures prominently into the city’s plan for emergency preparedness. He cited an incident in 1989 when an earthquake rendered the town hall unstable and city officials…

Jordan, Pakistan move toward WiMAX

A joint venture between the telecommunications provider for the Arab state of Qatar and a Saudi Arabian provider will enable WiMAX connectivity across Jordan and Pakistan, according to a press release from Aptilo Networks whose platform was chosen for the job. Qatar Telecom and A.A. Tukri Group of Companies in Saudi Arabia have partnered in the venture, called wi-tribe.  The Jordanian network is expected to be deployed in the second quarter  and the Pakistani network is expected to be live later this…

New life for Wireless Silicon Valley?

Vindu Goel of the San Jose Mercury News reports that Covad Communications and Cisco Systems will begin in April to build out a pilot for the network across one square mile in downtown San Carlos and will operate the pilot for at least three months. The test could breathe new life into the project. Azulstar stepped down as lead contractor on the project in December after it was unable to raise the necessary capital.

Scottish county chooses wireless as low-cost alternative

Twenty five communities in the Scottish county of Renfrewshire have gone wireless in an effort to promote online learning and e-commerce over residential high speed broadband.

The Renfrewshire Council decided to deploy a wireless mesh after determining it could be built for about one-tenth the cost of the hard-wired broadband solution that was original planned. The network, which is known as the Digital Inclusion Project, was designed to cover about five square kilometers.
