Spotlight on Philadelphia
Wireless Philadelphia received more than its share of attention this week as it found itself in the crosshairs of both the city council and the Ethos Group which released a report that was critical of Wireless Philadelphia's departures from the city's early vision for the network. Many opinions were expressed at a city council hearing about how the network, the pre-eminent big-city muni deployment in the U.S., is faring. Greg Goldman, CEO of Wireless Philadelphia, defended the initiative, pointed out numerous recent successes, and said that the group's 10 year contract with EarthLink insures its future. But EarthLink has offered no clues on that issue. The company failed to show up for the hearing, sending only a letter summarizing what they've spent on the build-out to date--$20 million, double their original estimate.
Also, be sure to make room on your spring calendar for our MuniWireless08DC conference. The conference is subtitled "The Broadband Applications Conference" and there will be a heavy focus on public safety applications and the emerging WiMAX influence on the muni wireless market. Registration details will follow soon. We hope to see you in the nation's capital.
