3G netbooks, iPhone modems and Wayport: WiMAX has more to worry about than LTE

When searching for a competitive threat to Sprint and Clearwire’s WiMax services, most observers end up looking at Long Term Evolution (LTE), the next-generation cellular technology publicly favored by AT&T and Verizon. But as recent news has shown, the big telcos aren’t waiting for LTE to start heating up the competition. Instead, they’re pushing harder on 3G-based options and greater Wi-Fi access as perhaps a way to keep customers from ever finding out what the WiMax consumer experience can be.

iPhone woes: Apple and AT&T sued, 3G network inadequate for data use

Wired reports today that iPhone users have been reporting a lot of outages of AT&T’s data service in places such as Boston, Chicago, Washington DC and St. Louis.

Meanwhile, a retired Chicken of the Sea executive has filed a lawsuit against AT&T and Apple alleging the carrier and device maker misrepresented the performance of the 3G iPhone on AT&T’s 3G network (too slow, often gets bumped down to an EDGE network). He claims there are too many people on the network…

Survey shows significant price drop for cellular calls in Europe

The European Regulator Group (ERG), an organization that brings together the 34 national regulators of the European Union, recently published its second report on wholesale and retail charges for cellular communications in Europe. The ERG acts as a central point for collecting data from each country’s telecom regulator. This report gives a clearer picture of the effects of regulations on the price of cellular calls in Europe over the past two years. At a recent press conference in Europe, Daniel…

The 3G iPhone = Clearwire’s biggest hurdle

After a week of all 3G iPhone all the time, it’s pretty clear that the performance hurdle is being set for the “new” Clearwire and its planned nationwide WiMax network: Devices will need to look and perform reasonably like an iPhone, at as-fast or faster speeds, for lower prices, to get any traction at all. Luckily for Clearwire and its partners, those barriers aren’t insurmountable, but there’s also not a lot of time or chances to get things right. As…

AT&T sees big boost for 3G speeds

AT&T says its 3G data network could reach download speeds of 20 Mbps by 2009, according to a report from AppleInsider Wednesday.

The report quoted Ralph de la Vega, AT&T Wireless President and CEO, telling attendees at a Morgan Stanley communications conference that AT&T engineers already have a HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) 3G network running in their labs, at speeds of 7.2 megabits per second (which is about double of AT&T’s wireless network capability today). The report adds that “AT&T…

How NOT to provide Wi-Fi service: censorship and difficult logins

A few months ago, I posted a story about free Wi-Fi on buses between London and Oxford (provided by the bus company Stagecoach on their Oxford Tube line), which uses 3G backhaul from Vodafone. While I have no doubt that a lot of people are using it, some have complained about the difficult logins, the slow speeds and censorship.

Jonathan Leighton complains that “[t]hey force you to fill out a little form before connecting. This includes giving them marketing info such…
