WiMAX deployments in France hit serious delays: a lesson for WiMAX operators in developed countries?

Two years ago, France granted 44 regional WiMAX licenses in the 3.5 GHz spectrum to operators and local governments, taking in €126 million in one of the most anticipated WiMAX auctions in Europe. This past summer, ARCEP, the French regulator conducted a survey to assess the speed of WiMAX deployments and determine whether WiMAX license holders had met the 30 June 2008 deadline. The findings are grim.

Motorola and Bollore test WiMAX in Paris

Motorola has announced it is working with Bollore Telecom in France to deploy a trial WiMAX network in ParisMotorola has announced it is working with Bollore Telecom in France to deploy a trial WiMAX network in Paris.

Bollore, holds 12 WiMAX licenses in France, will use the test network to assess its WiMAX efforts before deploying the network commercially. Motorola is not Bollore’s only WiMAX partner. The telecom is also conducting a Paris trial with Alcatel-Lucent.
