Ohio cities go forward with municipal wireless networks

Dublin and Gahanna, Ohio will be getting citywide wireless networks by 2009, thanks to the city councils’ approval of contracts with DHB Networks. The cities are following the anchor tenancy model whereby DHB Networks does not bear all of the cost of deployment. The cities are paying part of the cost of building the network.

No free citywide Wi-Fi for Dublin, Ireland

Dublin, Ireland is the latest city in Europe to run afoul of the European Union’s vague and haphazardly enforced state aid rules. Dublin had planned to offer free citywide Wi-Fi access but now says it cannot. The project would have cost 27 million Euros.

I recently posted an article about Berlin’s plan to offer free Wi-Fi and noted that it would end up like Prague’s plan — strangled at birth and morphed into a municipal only network with limited Internet access.
