Texas charter bus operator offers Wi-Fi to passengers

A Texas charter bus operator will be offering Wi-Fi access to passengers starting this summer. Executive Coach, the largest privately owned charter company in Texas, has signed a deal with Icomera, a vendor of Wi-Fi access points and gateways that use 3G/HSPA, EV-DO or WiMAX as backhaul. Executive Coach’s buses will be using Sprint’s EV-DO Rev A network as backhaul. The company hired SinglePoint Communications (based in Portland, Oregon) to install the network.

Free Wi-Fi on trains between London and UK Midlands

Wrexham & Shropshire railway will offer free Wi-Fi services to rail passengers on all trains running between Central London and the UK Midlands. According to the press release issued by Icomera (the company that supplies the wireless access points), the rail operator will also provide power outlets for laptops, netbooks, phones and other devices. Free Wi-Fi on buses between Luton Airport and central London

The Green Line express buses between Luton Airport and Victoria Station in central London are now offering free Wi-Fi to passengers. I have used the Green Line many times before and it is a very convenient bus service. Arriva plc, the operator of the Green Line bus service, has installed Icomera’s Moovbox equipment which uses 3G as backhaul for the service. In addition to Wi-Fi, Icomera’s gear allows Arriva to track the location of buses in real-time.

BT Wi-Fi traffic doubles in one year

British Telecom (BT) reports that between April and September 2008, customers spent twice as much time on its WiFi networks as in the preceding six months. People spent more than a million minutes a day on the average on BT OpenZone and BT FON networks.

BT is not the only company reporting dramatic increases in WiFi usage. Recently, Icomera reported a 272% increase in WiFi usage on public transport.

Free Wi-Fi on buses between Heathrow Airport and Reading

RailAir buses running between Heathrow Airport and Reading (a city in the UK technology corridor) are now offering free Wi-Fi service to passengers. The journey takes approximately 50 minutes. Buses are equipped with Icomera’s Moovbox M Series mobile broadband gateway which uses 3G as backhaul and allows the bus operator to track vehicles in real-time (via GPS-based vehicle location). Icomera reports 272 percent increase in Wi-Fi use on public transport

Icomera has just released interesting statistics on the use of Wi-Fi access in public transport (mostly in Europe). The company provides the Moovbox wireless access points to bus, ferry and train operators which provide Wi-Fi access to passengers and uses 3G, WiMAX or satellite backhaul.
