Icomera reports 272 percent increase in Wi-Fi use on public transport

Icomera has just released interesting statistics on the use of Wi-Fi access in public transport (mostly in Europe). The company provides the Moovbox wireless access points to bus, ferry and train operators which provide Wi-Fi access to passengers and uses 3G, WiMAX or satellite backhaul.

By the end of October 2008, over one million passengers had used Wi-Fi services in trains, buses and ferries, approximately 3.72 million times, a 272% increase over the past year. Among Icomera’s customers are large transport…

European Wi-Fi operator gets 15M EUR for expansion

The Cloud, a UK-based operator of Wi-Fi hotspots in Europe, has closed a €15 million round of financing from its current investors (Ferd Venture of Norway and GP Bullhound). The company will use the funds to expand its network of locations across Europe. At present, their hotspots are mostly in the UK, Germany, Sweden and Denmark, and they have partnerships with iPass (the Wi-Fi hotspot aggregator), O2, Orange and Vodafone.

Business use of Wi-Fi hotspots grows by 46%, 3G use increases by 59%

iPass released the latest edition of its Mobile Broadband Index which shows that business use of Wi-Fi hotspots (in the iPass network) grew by 46% between the first half of 2007 and the first half of 2008. 3G data use in the US increased by 59% between Q2 2007 and Q2 2008. iPass adds Tokyo city Wi-Fi network

This is good news for people who travel to Tokyo. iPass has just the Tokyo city Wi-Fi network operated by Livedoor Japan to their list of roaming partners. The area covered by this network is 60 square kilometers and is encircled by the Yamanote Line (a “circle” metro line operated by JR which is the busiest in Tokyo), in essence, central Tokyo. iPass claims largest hotspot network

iPass has announced a major expansion in Europe that it claims gives it the largest hotspot footprint of any service provider world-wide. Its world-wide network not encompasses about 90,000 hotspots in 70 countries.

The iPass press release on the announcement ranks the European countries with the most hotspots: the United Kingdom with 12,131, followed by France with 10,821 and Germanywith 9,827. London is the city with the most hotspots in the network followed by Paris, Berlin, ZurichandMunich.
