Wall Street Journal profiles ConnectKentucky’s role in state’s economic development

ConnectKentucky, a non-profit in Kentucky whose goal is to expand the availability of broadband in the state, got a write-up in the Wall Street Journal about its efforts to bring high-speed connections to businesses and people who work from home. The WSJ article mentions, but does not expand upon, people using broadband to work from their homes. With the rising price of petrol, more people should work from home, but without affordable broadband service, that’s impossible.

Wi-Fi on a budget: Prestonsburg’s $8500 muni Wi-Fi network

Prestonsburg, Kentucky (pop. 4000) is delivering free Wi-Fi service in the center of town for a mere $8500. The secret: they are using Meraki’s inexpensive wireless access points. The city had issued a public tender for its network but the bidders were asking too much money (in some cases over $100,000). Meraki’s equipment is used by in San Francisco and in many developing countries where wireless mesh equipment from mainstream vendors is simply too expensive for the local ISPs.

Phase I of $42M Kentucky public safety upgrade is complete

Kentucky has completed the initial segment in its three-year $42 million effort to overhaul its existing public safety network. The upgrade provides interoperable high-bandwidth communications.Kentucky has completed the initial segment in its three-year $42 million effort to overhaul its existing public safety network.

The IP-based Kentucky Emergency Warning System uses Harris Stratex Networks’ Truepoint digital microwave radio system. According to Harris STratex’s press release, it provides interoperable communications over a secure high-bandwidth microwave backbone.
