Korean city deploys muni wireless for public safety and free Internet access

Gangneung City in South Korea has deployed a municipal wireless network to assist city workers and residents in dealing with emergencies. The city has installed security cameras, weather sensors and fire alarm sensors, all of which will be monitored by Gangneung’s emergency personnel. The “Ubiquitous Sensor Network” (which uses IPv6) will also provide city residents and visitors with access to online sports, weather, disaster prevention and other information.

Korea uses Wi-Fi for intelligent highway project

Korea has conducted a test to find out if Wi-Fi can be used as a cost-effective way to deliver multimedia to Wi-Fi devices (portable and in-vehicle) along its highways. The Korean Highway Corporation used a  31-kilometer stretch between Pangyo and Osan to determine whether a Wi-Fi mesh network could achieve continuous 8 Mbps end-to-end connections for streaming video, voice over IP and multimedia applications at speeds reaching 100 km/hour. Visitors to Korean waterway get public Wi-Fi

Seoul City’s Cheonggye waterway has launched a wireless network, targeted to enhancing the experience of tourists and business visitors traveling to the city. The waterway and its surrounding park area opened in 2005 to much public acclaim as an urban renewal project.
