Massachusetts issues RFP seeking consultants for broadband deployment

The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Consulting Services for Initial Engagement with Private Sector Participants (No.2009- MBI-01) on behalf of the Massachusetts Broadband Institute. Somerville, MA issues RFI for citywide WiFi network

Somerville, Massachusetts (pop. 77,000; 4 square miles) has issued a Request for Interest (RFI) for its municipal Wi-Fi network. The city wants to achieve three goals:

improve public service: give city personnel access to data while they are out in the field, enhance public safety; bridge the digital divide: inexpensive wireless broadband access for all residents; and encourage more economic development and innovation.

Boston commuters get Wi-Fi aboard train

Suburban Boston commuters will soon have Wi-Fi Internet access. A 45-mile commuter train line from Worcester to Boston, Mass.,will offer the service aboard at least one car per train. Forty-five cars are being set up for service in this pilot project.

The service will use fixed Wi-Fi antennas mounted in the cars to provide connectivity to commuters with Sprint’s EVDO cellular service to maintain the Internet connection.

Massachusetts police go wireless

Massachusetts police agencies will deploy a wireless integrated mobile computing device system for use in training and tactical operations.

Catcher Holdings, Inc., whose CATCHER system will be used, announced it is partnering with Tactical vision Inc. to provide real-time video and data communications for officers in the field.
