Riverside to take over AT&T citywide Wi-Fi network

The city council of Riverside, California has agreed to take over the Wi-Fi network that AT&T has deployed across the city. Minneapolis completes municipal Wi-Fi network

The Minneapolis Wi-Fi network has been completed after more than 2 years and $20M. The city’s service provider, US Internet, also claims they have 16,500 subscribers and that the number is growing. They hope to reach 30,000 in three years.

Ruckus Wireless has unveiled an outdoor dual-band (5.8 GHz and 2.4 GHz) 802.11n Wi-Fi access point (the ZoneFlex 7762) with dynamic beamforming to overcome problems that have plagued outdoor Wi-Fi deployments, especially over large, densely populated areas such as city centers, resort complexes, school campuses, and concert venues. Free downtown Wi-Fi comes to Marion, North Carolina and Akron, Ohio

Marion, North Carolina is offering free Wi-Fi service in its downtown area. The network was set up by Trificient Technologies, which was one of the respondents to an RFP issued by the city. The city used a grant from the North Carolina STEP Program to pay for the cost of deployment. According to the Asheville Citizen Times, the service is available along Main Street with speeds varying from 1.5 Mbps to 6 Mbps.

NYC responds to questions regarding Wi-Fi public tender

Several weeks ago, I posted the Request for Information issued by the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) seeking providers for free Wi-Fi service in NYC parks. The DoITT has just posted their responses to questions asked by prospective bidders:

Naperville Wi-Fi network up and running again

Naperville, Illinois has turned on its downtown Wi-Fi service again after network owner, MetroFi, shut down last year. The city decided not to dismantle the network; instead, they got a local provider named WOW Access to take over the network and reactivate the service.
