Aurora, Illinois free Wi-Fi network to shut down

MetroFi will be shutting down its Wi-Fi network in Aurora, Illinois because the city will not pay any money for the expansion of the network. MetroFi was asking the city for $3.5 million. MetroFi’s business model - offering free Wi-Fi supported by ads - has proved unsuccessful. The city claims it has not completely given up on citywide Wi-Fi, but how such a network will ever be deployed is not clear. Neighboring community Naperville will also see its MetroFi network…

Naperville says no more free Wi-Fi for you!

Naperville, Illinois has decided not to  take over the Wi-Fi network deployed by MetroFi after the company abandoned its plans to offer Wi-Fi service in a number of US cities, including Portland, Oregon. Taking over the network would have required Naperville to invest $3.7 million. Unless another ISP takes over the network, residents will no longer have free Wi-Fi access after June.
