EU approves use of public funds for broadband in Scotland

The European Commission has allowed Scotland to use £3.4 million (€4.32 million) in public funds to bring broadband to remote areas of Scotland. EU state aid rules place restrictions on member states using public funds to subsidize the creation of broadband infrastructure or services that compete with private enterprise. Scottish county chooses wireless as low-cost alternative

Twenty five communities in the Scottish county of Renfrewshire have gone wireless in an effort to promote online learning and e-commerce over residential high speed broadband.

The Renfrewshire Council decided to deploy a wireless mesh after determining it could be built for about one-tenth the cost of the hard-wired broadband solution that was original planned. The network, which is known as the Digital Inclusion Project, was designed to cover about five square kilometers.

Eleven luxury buses that operate between the airport and Glasgow city center will be equipped with Moovera’s Moovbox M100 mobile broadband gateway to provide access at speeds of up to 1.4Mbps.
