Boingo adds Swisscom hotspots to their roaming network

One of the few pieces of good news this week (as I’m trying to avoid thinking about the meltdown in the financial markets): Boingo Wireless has added 1100 Swisscom hotspots in Switzerland to their network of roaming partners. Why is this such a big deal for me? Because Swisscom’s Wi-Fi hotspot service, not only in Switzerland but in other European countries, has always been very expensive (see my 2004 posts on Wi-Fi in Antwerp and Swisscom Eurospot not happy with Muniwireless).…

Free Wi-Fi in Bern for the 2008 European football championships

People who are visiting Bern, Switzerland this summer for the European 2008 football championships will have free Wi-Fi access to the entire network of TheNet, thanks to a partnership with Energy Water Bern and the Espace Media Group. There’s already free Wi-Fi in Bern wherever TheNet has its coverage. In addition to the existing locations (Bern main station, Bärenplatz, Waisenhausplatz parts of the Länggasse), there’s Wi-Fi access at the Bubenbergplatz, Helvetiaplatz, Münstergasse, parts of Wylerring, the Kirchenfeld Quartier and Sandrainstrasse.

Lucerne, Switzerland gets citywide Wi-Fi

Lucerne, Switzerland will be the first city in Switzerland to get citywide Wi-Fi coverage (20 square kilometers) by 2008. The city is deploying phase 1, which is a hotzone (4 square kilometers) in the city center. If all goes as planned, the hotzone will go live at the end of 2006.
