Oklahoma City rolls out world’s largest muni Wi-Fi mesh network

On June 3, 2008 Oklahoma City is launching what it claims to be the largest city-owned municipal Wi-Fi mesh network in the world. The network, which went live in September 2006 and has been improved and expanded since that time, will be used only for public safety and municipal applications; it is not open to the public for Internet access.

Clovis, Calif., is eager to deploy a municipal network. Planet Halo, a subsidiary of Concierge Technologies, announced the completion today. Planet Halo is working with WirelessVillage, a privately-held Ohio company as its development partner to oversee the installation, operate the network’s NOC, and provide customer service. The network uses Tropos Networks’ MESH technology for licensed and unlicensed frequencies.
