Fauquier County, Virginia issues RFP for countywide broadband network

Fauquier County. Virginia has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the creation of a county-wide broadband network. Note: the network can be wired, wireless or both. Fauquier County (pop. 63,000, largely rural) is in the north central Piedmont region of Virginia, 40 miles southwest of Washington DC. It covers 660 square miles (1710 square kilometers). Although the county is not funding the network, it is not requiring the provider to offer free access.

Orange Co., Va., looks to expand public safety network

Orange County, Va., intends to expand its current public safety network to provide 95 percent converage and has issued an RFP for the project. In addition to providing coverage for all base locations and fire stations, the project seeks to identify support structures suitable for antennas and to improve cell phone, as well as wireless broadband, coverage.

Spotsylvania weighs muni wireless

Spotsylvania, Virginia, is taking baby steps toward the development of a wireless broadband network. The city Board of Supervisors is seeking a consultant to assist it in planning.

The board recently approved $10,000 to hire a consultant to “help the wireless broadband authority navigate the State Corporation Commission’s requirements for approval” of a network, according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star.

Virginia schools lease their education bands

Liberty University and the Virginia School of the Arts intend to use their educational broadcast licenses to expand broadband access in Lynchburg, Va. The schools intend to make their four 2.5 GHZ educational licenses available to a private provider which would deploy the service. A joint organization, the Lynchburg Educational Broadband (LEB) Joint Venture, expects the move will provide a revenue stream for the schools, as well.
