Milwaukee to deploy 4.9 Ghz security network

The city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, will deploy a 4.9 Ghz wireless backhaul network in the first phase of a 97 square mile deployment of wireless video surveillance equipment. Madison, Wisc., will soon be unwired for a new WiMAX service offering secure digital phone and high-speed Internet access.

TDS Telecommunications Corp., the provider that will host the service, is holding a press conference with its strategic partner, Alvarion LTD, at the TDS heaquarters in Madison. The event will include briefings on WiMAX technology and details about Madison’s new service.

Milwaukee, Wisc., launches test network

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, launched a downtown test network for its proposed citywide municipal Wi-Fi system Saturday.Milwaukee, Wisconsin, launched a downtown test network for its proposed citywide municipal Wi-Fi system Saturday.

Midwest Fiber Networks, which is deploying the network, installed about 100 antennas for the test. If the demonstration is approved, nearly 2800 antennas will be installed across the city.

The test network, which was to have been completed in January, encountered delays because of difficulty getting permission to mount antennas.
