3G netbooks, iPhone modems and Wayport: WiMAX has more to worry about than LTE

When searching for a competitive threat to Sprint and Clearwire’s WiMax services, most observers end up looking at Long Term Evolution (LTE), the next-generation cellular technology publicly favored by AT&T and Verizon. But as recent news has shown, the big telcos aren’t waiting for LTE to start heating up the competition. Instead, they’re pushing harder on 3G-based options and greater Wi-Fi access as perhaps a way to keep customers from ever finding out what the WiMax consumer experience can be.

PC Magazine’s guide to Wi-Fi: a must-have for the traveler who wants to stay connected

PC Magazine has published a long article entitled Access Everywhere: The Definitive Guide to Wi-Fi which tells you where to find Wi-Fi on the road, in public transport, hotels, airports; how to turn your mobile phone into a Wi-Fi hotspot; how to share Wi-Fi connections, and more. It’s the best guide I’ve seen for getting and staying connected while traveling in the US. The article mentions Muniwireless and I have to admit that now, I have to update the list…

T-Mobile Netherlands unveils 3G iPhone pricing, offers only 2-year contracts

T-Mobile Netherlands has finally announced the prices it will charge for the 3G iPhone (and subscriptions) in the Netherlands. Be warned: you have to sign up for a 2-year contract. I dislike these long contracts that mobile operators force people to sign.

No wonder MVNOs such as Blyk are attracting a lot of young people who hate long contracts with cancellation penalties. I think this is the wave of the future. And why doesn’t have a 1-year option for the iPhone?

Excessive data roaming charges, lack of transparency hurt adoption of mobile data plans

A study carried out for the European Commission reveals that Europeans are shocked by the extremely high charges they incur when they use their mobile phones and laptops for data access outside their home countries. They are also unhappy about the the lack of transparency related to the pricing by volume of data (megabytes) used.

Indeed, lack of transparency is a serious problem: most people don’t read the fine print on their mobile phone contracts. When the operators say they are selling you…

MVNO Blyk succeeds in providing free mobile phone service

I’ve written a lot about Blyk, a mobile virtual network operator based in the UK, that has a novel business model: giving away free mobile phone service in exchange for users’ viewing MMS and SMS ads. While this “free service in exchange for ads” model has not worked well in the citywide Wi-Fi space and has never been tried in the cellular industry, Blyk claims they are doing very well. The reason: they target 16-24 year olds. Unless you fall…

Does Android delay mean more lag for WiMax?

Maybe I should have added a “fourth problem” to my previous post on GigaOM about the challenges facing Google’s Android open-source mobile OS: The inherent slowness of anything that touches the mobile carrier marketplace, a theory Om spells out in no uncertain terms with his post today about new delays for the launch of Android-based devices.

Since Sprint is mentioned in the WSJ story as one of the carriers asking for more features, it might mean that devices taking advantage of…
