Skype on Heathrow Express Wi-Fi sounds pretty good

Today I had a conversation with Andy Abramson via Skype. He was traveling on the Heathrow Express (the train that ferries people between Heathrow Airport and London’s Paddington Station), but what made the call very special was that he was using the train’s Wi-Fi service, accessing the network via his new Asus eee PC900, a mini mobile laptop. I was on my Mac Book Pro at home on Skype. None of us used a headset. The quality of the connection…

FON’s global wireless ambitions: what’s taking so long?

I am a Fonero. I have a FON access point in my house in Amsterdam because I like to share my wireless connection. I have been a Fonero for several years, but when I travel, I don’t see a lot of Foneros around and that’s sad because the idea behind FON is that if I share my connection, I can find other Foneros willing to share theirs. Fring lets you make free calls via Wi-Fi on your iPhone

If you have an iPhone, you can now make free VOIP calls over Wi-Fi, thanks to Fring, an application that has been available for devices such as Nokia’s Symbian phones. According to Fring, they are the first “native” mobile VOIP application for the iPhone. This is very handy for iPhone owners who are traveling abroad and want to avoid roaming charges when they make voice calls.

You can download the pre-release version from www.fring.com/fring_is/fringcubator.

MuniWireless 101: Technologies: Devices

One important driver for public broadband networks is the ability to support a broad range of mobile devices. Municipalities typically see two major benefits in catering to such activity. The first is to allow citizens to use their own mobile devices, either in hotspot areas or freely roaming around a city. The second is that public workers can perform work such as building inspection, completing forms and reports onsite, and avoiding both the need to return to their offices and…
