Hong Kong rolls out free Wi-Fi service

Hong Kong will be providing free Wi-Fi service in 2000 hotspots serving 350 government buildings, sports and recreational centers, and three public parks. The local government is working with telecommunications provider, PCCW and equipment provider, Aruba Networks, to offer the service to residents and visitors. The project is called GovWiFi and will take five years to complete. Will better network management help Lompoc attract and keep customers?

Lompoc, California is trying to make its citywide wireless broadband service work harder by attracting and keeping more customers. The city has replaced its previous network management system with a new one from Aptilo and claims that Aptilo’s system now allows to city to manage its network better, including being able identify where problems occur, when customers call in. Free Wi-Fi service on trains in Denmark

Arriva, a train operator in Scandinavia, is offering free Wi-Fi service to passengers traveling across Denmark, starting with the trains that run between Aarhus, Thisted and Tønder in Jutland. Arriva carries more than 7 million passengers each year.

Cleveland’s OneCommunity CEO named “visionary”

A New York think tank focused on broadband’s contributions to economic growth  has named the president and CEO of Cleveland’s OneCommunity “Intelligent Community Visionary of the Year for 2008.”

OneCommunity is a nonprofit organization focused on using information technologies to improve the quality of life and economic development in Northeast Ohio communities.

Minneapolis cuts the ribbon on muni Wi-Fi network

It’s a bit behind schedule and somewhat over budget but, by the end of the month, Minneapolis‘ muni Wi-Fi network will be a reality. And, by all reports, folks there think it’s worth the wait.
