Map of mobile (or nomadic) WiMAX service around the world
Here’s a map of mobile or nomadic WiMAX networks around the world. My definition of mobille/nomadic WiMAX: you don’t need a WiMAX modem, only a USB dongle.
Cities marked in green means the service is up and running; cities in yellow are about to launch. The best example of a nomadic WiMAX network I’ve seen so far is WorldMax’s Aerea service in Amsterdam which offers a daily rate for visitors.
Sadly, Yota has delayed the launch of WiMAX service in St. Petersburg and Moscow. They were supposed to go live in November 2008 but that date has been pushed back to end of March 2009.
Yota has launched WiMAX service in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Amsterdam’s WorldMAX has a daily rate for their WiMAX service which a few operators also offer although most require one month or more subscriptions.
UQ Communications in Japan has just launched a trial beginning Feb 2009 till June 2009 in Tokyo, Yokohama and Kawasaki. Deployments are planned in Osaka and Nagasaki.
