Wolfsburg, Germany and Volkswagen launch Wi-Fi test bed

The city of Wolfsburg, Germany and Volkswagen are setting up a Wi-Fi testbed in the city. The network is called Wireless Wolfsburg and is a partnership between the city, Volkwagen and a local systems integrator. The network uses Tropos equipment.

Volkswagen Research Group wants to use the network to test new vehicle applications that provide passengers with information about local events, tourist attractions, weather and traffic conditions. This comes as no surprise given that Volkswagen is testing a Wi-Fi enabled car. According to the press release, the plan is to create an operating company in 2009 to take over the commercial operation of the wireless network to extend access to the municipality and its residents.
