Free Wi-Fi has become an advertising tool

I recently posted an article about Toyota’s free Wi-Fi hotzones, which they set up to promote the Prius and green tech (the Wi-Fi access points use Meraki’s solar-powered nodes). The most recent is Microsoft’s Bing search engine teaming up with JiWire to offer free Wi-Fi. The airlines have been teaming up with companies sponsoring free Wi-Fi in exchange for advertising:
- Google sponsoring free Wi-Fi on Virgin America
- Toyota Lexus and American Airlnes
- Yahoo providing free Wi-Fi in Times Square
