Tel Aviv is deploying 80 Wi-Fi hotspots around the city, including in Hatikva Park and the Cinematheque, to provide free Wi-Fi service, especially to tourists who want to avoid expensive data roaming charges. As a result, most hotspots are located along the beach and near popular tourist destinations.
Each hotspot can serve 25 users at a speed of around 500 Kbps. The network cost around NIS 6 million in partnership with Motorola. Tel Aviv’s mayor proclaimed that the citywide Wi-Fi hotspot project makes Tel Aviv “the startup city of the Startup Nation”, referring to the book, Start-up Nation: The Story of Israel’s Economic Miracle.
